What to expect from a month in Puerto Escondido

🏄 🧘 🌮 🥥🤿 🌴 🏖️ 🛫 🏙️ 🛬

Slow Down

Puerto Escondido is pure chill vibes. It's Yoga at sunrise. It's having a nap in a hammock after lunch. It's wandering down to the beach at sunset. It's life in sandals and a bikini. It's a world away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life back at home. If you want to take some time to decompress, reflect, and slow down, Puerto is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Indulge in the Food

Authentic Mexican cuisine. Yes please! This is not the Tex Mex you gorge on back home. This is fresh chillies, juicy limes, and fish caught that morning, wrapped in a taco that will make your taste buds explode. Tacos are a dollar each from the local restaurants! Oaxacan food (the region of Mexico PE is in) is particularly renowned in Mexico. Once you're bored of the freshest seafood tacos you've ever tasted, you should seek out the Oaxacan specialty dishes. They revolve around cheese and chocolate, what a dream!

Surf's Up

Surfers from all over the world flock Puerto Escondido for its waves. Playa Zicatella is one of the heaviest and most dangerous waves in the world, see for yourself. But fear not! Playa Carrizalillo is a super mellow left-hand point perfect for learning to surf.

Play with the Plankton

Manialtepec lagoon is one of the few places in the world where you can swim amongst bioluminescent plankton. This is a truly bizarre experience, like swimming in a glowstick, and has to be experienced to be believed.

Escape to the City

There may come a point where you crave the hustle and bustle of city life again. Fortunately for us, Mexico City is a short and cheap flight away, perfect for a long weekend. Mexico City is a modern metropolis with all the amenities that you would find in New York or LA, but for a fraction of the price, and with a Mexican twist! Bustling nightlife, Michelin star restaurants, and a young and ambitious energy, Mexico City is far from the city you were expecting.

What's Included?

Accommodation & study space

When combining online classes with world travel, it's vitally important that you have your own space to recharge and relax. That's why each Edumad on our programs always has their own private room.

You will also have access to a study space with super fast internet and comfortable seating and desks. Perfect for keeping on top of your online classes!

Community

You'll be living, learning and exploring alongside a handpicked group of like-minded individuals.

All participants of our programs must be taking online classes. Most are taking classes towards a degree, but not all.

90% of Edumads are 18-25 years old, with the average age being 22.

24/7 in person support

Our Program Coordinators live alongside participants for the duration of the program. They are available 24 hours a day to assist in any situation.

Beyond the Coordinators themselves, Edumadic has an extensive support network of local suppliers, agents, and advisors in each location, accumulated from both previous time on programs in that region and the personal travel experiences of all Edumadic staff.

Location guides & maps

We provide you with our own personalized maps and location guides with information collated from all our past programs as well as our own personal exploration.

We also provide a briefing on arrival, sharing with you the most important information, particularly around safety and navigating the neighborhood you will be calling home.

Organization of trips and events

The Edumadic team are on hand to organise various trips and events throughout the program.

Typically this means daily activities in the area that we live, weekly day trips to tourist hotspots, and bi-weekly overnight excursions to exciting sights and experiences that are a bit further afield.

Volunteering opportunities

In each destination you will have the opportunity to volunteer in the local environment and giveback to the community that hosts our programs.

The opportunities vary depending on the location and season, but most often they involve animal welfare, the environment, and teaching english.

Airport transfer on arrival

Landing in a new country can be stressful, and is the time that you're most vulnerable to scams. We will pick you up from the airport to make sure your time abroad starts without a hitch.

Transfers from our accommodation back to the airport are not included in program fees but we will assist in organizing this for you.

A life changing experience

If you believe our past Edumads, joining one of our programs is probably going to change your life!

What's Not Included?

Classes

The online classes you plan to take while on an Edumadic program are not included in the program fees unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Ultimately it is each Edumad's responsibility to ensure they are enrolled in classes appropriate for taking while on a program. However, we can offer guidance on what type of classes and course-load is suitable for a program.

We have also collected the best online courses for college credit on the internet in our Course Catalog. These courses are all very well suited for combining with world travel.

Flights

Your initial flight from your home to the start of the program, and from the end of the program back home, are not included in the program fees.

We offer flight booking support upon request, and can assist in planning transfers between back to back programs.

Spending Money

Participants need to bring money to cover their living costs on the program.

Estimated living costs are listed above in the "Key Program Info" section. It includes allowance for food, drink, entertainment and all typical activities and excursions that are enjoyed in that location.

Travel Insurance

All our participants are required to acquire appropriate travel insurance for the duration of programs they attend.

Due to the long term nature of our programs your home insurance is unlikely to be appropriate.

We are happy to suggest insurance providers designed for participants of programs such as ours.

Visas

Edumads are responsible for their own visa to be granted entry into the country.

Most programs run in countries where there is no pre-planning required to enter the country. Visas are issued at immigration as you go through the airport, or are not required at all. Sometimes a small fee is charged.

We will inform you of the visa requirements for the program you choose to attend, but ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure you are eligible to enter the country where your program runs.

Securing Your Place

Step 1: Complete the application

  1. Fill out the application form
  2. Book your interview

It is required that all participants of Edumadic programs are studying online. Most are taking online classes towards a degree, but you are allowed to be taking unaccredited classes.

If you would like to earn college credit online while on the program, but aren't currently enrolled anywhere, or your university doesn't offer suitable online classes, let us know. There are many organizations that offer affordable, online courses for college credit that anybody can enroll in. We can help you pick one that's a good fit for your circumstances.

Step 2: Pay your deposit

  • $600 to secure your place.

Step 3: Pay remaining fees

  • The remaining fees for the program will be due 10 weeks before the start of the program.

COVID booking terms

  • You are able to defer your attendance to a future program (within 18 months of the original booking) for any reason if notice is given before remaining fees are due.
  • If COVID related restrictions are put in place that make it impossible for us to run the program, a full refund of all fees paid will be available up to 30 days before the start of the program.
  • If there are less than 30 days before the start of the program and COVID related restrictions are put in place which make it impossible for us to run the program, 50% of all fees paid will be refunded, and the remaining 50% can be used against a future program (within 18 months of the original booking).
